CJL’s Co-Director, Cheyanne Scharbatke-Church, and CJL's Security Sector Advisor, Blair Ashford, Discuss the Intersection of Corruption and Conflict with Jordan Arnold from the SecurityScape podcast.

Cheyanne Scharbatke-Church, CJL’s Co-Director, joined Blair Ashford, CJL’s Security Sector Advisor, in a recent episode of the SecurityScape podcast. The two discussed how conflict and insecurity contribute and are often interconnected with corruption in conflict-affected states. Conflict often leads to a concentration of power around military forces, and the strict hierarchy present in military structures can create a culture of endemic corruption. Additionally, conflict can give birth to new social norms that reinforce corrupt practices.

For these reasons, anti-corruption efforts should not be delayed until a conflict has been resolved. Rather, they should be put into practice early, alongside conflict resolution.

Cheyanne Scharbatke-Church and Blair Ashford analyze these topics and more in this episode of Securityscape. Listen to the episode here!
